George Bean is looking for people who would like to take part in a collaborative project leading to a public performance. The aim is to have the first showing during the Transcreen film festival, in Amsterdam in 2017.
The idea of this project is to give a platform to trans* and gender nonconforming people, through the medium of theatre. I hope the performance will challenge assumptions and give a voice to trans* peoples’ real lived experiences, rather than those often constructed by mainstream society and media.
The performance will include text and movement, and the content will be developed from the participants own individual experiences. My role will be as facilitator and director. During a research period we will use different methods to build material. These will include verbatim theatre, drama, movement and writing exercises. Eventually we will meld individual monologues and scenes with group sections into a coherent piece. The emphasis will be on having fun and developing trust as a group, whilst building a quality performance work. We will work in English.
Participation is open to all who identify as being on the trans* spectrum. No formal performance training is necessary but a commitment to the research process and an openness to work with others to build a show, is really important. We’ll be working physically, as well as verbally, so a willingness to work with the body is also important, although this will be done with respect towards each person’s individual capabilities and comfort levels. I welcome applications from all ages, ethnic/cultural backgrounds and walks of life.
We will be rehearsing in the AnaMorphic Studio at Overtoom 301. Unfortunately the studio is not wheelchair accessible. If you would like to participate but stairs would make it impossible for you, please let me know.
The piece will be made over a 6 month period, starting in November. Rehearsals will be once a week in the beginning and later several times a week.
Our first meet up will be on Saturday 26th November from 14:00-16:00.
I’m George, a cis-gendered performer and theatre-maker with a life-long interest in gender issues and a severe aversion to labels, boxes and assumptions in general. I have a background in both performing arts and activism, originally having trained as a dancer and choreographer, but recently focussing more on directing and multi-media theatre. I like to work with performers who are formally untrained and come from different backgrounds and age groups. I’m also interested in site specific performance and ‘artivism’ (combining activism and art). My website: http://www.georgebean.com.
Want to join?
If you’re interested in being a part of this, or you have further questions, I would love to hear from you! You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
